who had a mean PCV of 49.4% with a control group who had a mean PCV of 42.1 %. The mean TEI in the first group was 31.25 £2, which was significantly greater than that in the second group—27.5 n (P < 0.05) [5]. These observations may help to explain the "surprisingly increased response in TEI" noted by the authors. The influence of PCV clearly assumes greater importance with larger variations in PCV, seen, for example, after cardiac surgery. Failure to understand the limitations of TEI in the estimation of lung water may explain why a technique that was well described more than 20 years ago has yet to find its way into routine clinical use.

Extraction of Sensory part of Ulnar Nerve Signal Using Blind Source Separation Method

A recorded nerve signal via an electrode is composed of many evokes or action potentials, (originated from individual axons) which may be considered as different initial sources. Recovering these primitive sources in its turn may lead us to the anatomic originations of a nerve signal which will give us outstanding foresights in neural rehabilitations. Accordingly, clinical interests may be r...

Effect of surface electrode positioning on the compound action potential evoked by ulnar nerve stimulation in anaesthetized infants and children.

The effect of surface electrode positioning on the evoked compound action potential (ECAP) was studied during inhalation anaesthesia without neuromuscular blockade. The ECAP of five full-term infants (aged 2-20 weeks) and five children (age 1-10 yr) was recorded with a neuromuscular relaxation monitor (Relaxograph, Datex) after supramaximal ulnar nerve stimulation. The five recording electrode ...

A method to facilitate regional anaesthesia by detection of mixed nerve action potentials.

We have studied conduction anaesthesia of the median and ulnar nerves at the axilla using mixed nerve action potentials (MNAP) as a guide to needle position in three volunteers. The median and ulnar nerves were stimulated distally at the wrist using surface electrodes and MNAP were detected proximally in the axilla using an insulated needle electrode. The increase in amplitude of MNAP to maximu...

Surface electrical stimulation to evoke referred sensation.

Surface electrical stimulation (SES) is being investigated as a noninvasive method to evoke natural sensations distal to electrode location. This may improve treatment for phantom limb pain as well as provide an alternative method to deliver sensory feedback. The median and/or ulnar nerves of 35 subjects were stimulated at the elbow using surface electrodes. Strength-duration curves of hand sen...
